Carers Week with Carers of West Lothian

During carers week we wanted to shine a spotlight on a service that provides support to carers within West Lothian and we reached out to the team at Carers of West Lothian to hear about the work they do and how they keep themselves well.

Carers of West Lothian is a well-established local charity offering information, advice and support to all unpaid carers (from age 8) and disabled people in West Lothian. We offer a range of services developed to meet the needs and improve the lives of the people we support.

Carers of West Lothian is a well-established local charity offering information, advice and support to all unpaid carers (from age 8) and disabled people in West Lothian. We offer a range of services developed to meet the needs and improve the lives of the people we support.

We work with various partners and organisations to raise awareness of unpaid carers and the amazing things they do within their families and communities.

On a day to day basis we provide information and advice on a variety of topics as well as practical support such as power or attorney, benefit checks and training. We offer emotional and wellbeing focused support by providing a much needed listening ear, peer support opportunities and through our Mental Health and Wellbeing Project. We offer a range of holistic therapies, discounted leisure opportunities and funding for carer breaks. We believe that in order to care for others, carers need to look after themselves!

Carers of West Lothian have been around for over 30 years and are as passionate about what we do today as we were on day one. Carers are remarkable and without all that they do, our economy and communities would struggle. They deserve and need support to help them in their caring role. Carers welcome us on their journey which is a privilege. They not only share their lows with us but their highs and happy times too!

Within our organisation, staff have access to emotional support both on the job and out of hours. We take our own wellbeing seriously and make sure to check-in with each other regularly. We enjoy time out together, having a cuppa and a chat, staff away days as well as our own individual tools. Some staff like to run, others like to cycle while some enjoy reading, music or walks along the coast.

Its Carers Week from 5-11 June 2023 and this year’s theme is ‘Recognising and supporting carers in the community’.

Here at Carers of West Lothian, we are getting involved. We will be out and about during the week as well as sharing information on our socials. It’s a time to celebrate the carers we know and identify new carers who need support. If you are a carer, please get in touch. Our friendly staff will be happy to chat and tell you more about how we can support you. You can also help by telling other carers about us!
