The Older People Active Lives – OPAL (Cyrenians)

Who is this for?

  • People aged 60 years old and over

Who provides this?

  • Cyrenians

The Older People Active Lives (OPAL) service supports older people to maintain and increase their independence and wellbeing, and re-engage with social, leisure, and community activities.

OPAL connects an older person with a team of dedicated volunteers who offer encouragement, companionship, and assistance.

Referrals can be made by completing a referral form. You can contact them via phone number or email address on the right, or download a form from

At present, OPAL is working on returning to face-to-face support on a small scale with existing clients. They will not be taking referrals for new face-to-face support (home visits, walks, driving to activities etc). They will review the situation over the coming months and gradually reintroduce new referrals when appropriate.

For this reason, they can only accept referrals for the services listed below.

Current support available through OPAL:

OPAL Zoom Room (weekly online social and activity group) – Every Wednesday 2.00 pm – 3.00 pm on Zoom.

OPAL Kitchen (monthly cooking and baking demonstrations and chat) – The first Tuesday of every month, 2.00 pm – 3.00 pm on Zoom.

OPAL Reading Room (monthly online book club) – The last Thursday of every month, 11.00 am – 12.00 pm on Zoom.

For joining instructions to their online groups, please call 01506 815 815 or email

Please note: Due to current covid restrictions related to the Omicron variant, all face-to-face groups are currently temporarily suspended. OPAL hope to resume the groups as soon as is safe to do so and will update this listing once groups have re-started.
